"Throwback" jerseys are a big these days, so we guess it makes sense that "throwback" Dutch cultural phenomenons work as a team name.

Centralia High School Orphans (Boys teams) and Annies (Girls teams)
Naming an adolescent sports team after adolescents no one wants has got to do wonders for high schoolers with an already non-existent self-esteem.

Butte Pirates
Yea. When racial slurs don't work for your team name, it's proably best to just move on to homophobic ones.

Time for a history lesson. First of all, the KKK we have today bears no relationship to the one that existed between 1865 and 1874 other than sharing a name. There have actually been three KKK organizations, and more if you realize that the current one, begun in the 1950s, is actually a group of small very loosely associated organizations all using the same name. Second, Nathan Bedford Forrest DID NOT found the original KKK. That is an abject falsehood. In fact, according to historian Brian Wills, there is considerable doubt as to whether or not he was actually Grand Wizard,a position that is commonly attributed to him. It is pretty certain he was at least a member. But a founder? That is a most definite and resounding "no". The first KKK was founded by a group of 6 former Confederate generals, none of which were Forrest. Further, the main targets of KKK violence during that time were the Loyal Leagues and Republican state governments, with the aim of resisting the "carpetbaggers" and their reform agenda. Blacks were not targeted specifically as a group although they were targeted often because of their membership in Loyal Leagues and positions in Republican governments and candidacies as Republicans. Forrest ended his membership with the group in 1869, 5 years before it was forceably disbanded by federal legislation.

Vincennes Lincoln Alices in Vincennes, Indiana. The mascot is named after the book "Alice of Old Vincennes." Who was Alice you ask? She was the town whore. Our mascot is called Big A and is a green blob. Ironically our girls teams are called The Lady Alices.

Another offensive high school mascot is the Orofino Maniacs. Orofino is a small town on the Clearwater River and home of Idaho State Hospital North, since 1908, then called the Insane Asylum which housed over 500 people with mental illnesses by the 1940s. The high school adopted the name the "Maniacs" which is depicted by a wild haired hopping up and down person in the late 1920s. Orofino claims the mascot has nothing to do with the hospital in spite of the fact that the high school and hospital are on the same road next to each other. Today the hospital is a 55 bed modern facility where people with mental illnesses are treated for short periods and return to their communities. This mascot name is discriminatory and stigmatizing to people with biological illnesses and is one of the worst mascot names in history.

Okay Big Blacks is short for Point Pleasant Black Knights. Not is it just shorter it also goes with our chant "Let's Go Big Blacks" it would not go together if it was Let's Go Black Knights. And our football players are big guys. So that is another good reason we are called Big Blacks..... LET'S GO BIG BLACKS LET'S GO!!!

I graduated from Yuma High and there is a story behind it. In the 1800s Yuma was the site of the Federal maximum security Prison. (before Alcatraz) They closed the prison in 1909. In 1910, the Yuma community wanted to start a high school, and here was a campus that every school needs..lots of little rooms,a cafeteria, guard towers with machine guns...anyway soon after our football team beat a team froma bigger town, and they said "go back to your prison criminals!" and the name stuck. We have a different modern campus now and the prison is a cool museum but we're still proud of our name!

The "Poca Dots" isn't spelled with a K, to the poster who commented on that. I graduated from Point Pleasant High School (Go Big Blacks!) and the name is a shortening of our actual mascot, the Black Knights. Of course, no one except the old band director ever called us that. We've been the Big Blacks for as long as I can remember.

My mother worked at the Arkansas school for the Deaf for years, so I spent a lot of time there growing up. Those kids picked that mascot. Because it was funny, not offensive. The great thing? They still think it's funny. Just because their hearing is impaired doesn't mean that their sense of humor is... Unfortunately, I don't think I can say the same for the person who compiled these photos...

Agreed, your number one isn't funny when you know the pronunciation, but even the unbiased observer wouldn't guess that it's pronounced "but".

I'm glad Crystal shed some light on the correct pronunciation of "Butte," however she was incorrect regarding the origin of the "Ophans" nickname. It came from a Chicago sportswriter around 1936 after commenting that the kids from Centralia playing basketball in their tattered uniforms, "looked like a bunch of orphans." The name stuck, and people from there, including me, are very proud to call themselves "Ophans."

The "Leopards" is a play on the rock band "Def Leopard." The school for which the Leopards are a mascot is a school for the deaf and blind, so they are the "Deaf Leopards," get it? It isn't actually offensive, they are a wonderful school.

Yeah, but the Orphans were obviously named after the mining disaster left many youth orphaned. I always thought that the Vandalia Vandals was an interesting take on things. Let's start all the children out with a moniker sure to incite them to be criminals at a young age!

Butte is not "butt"...anyone who took elementary school English knows the "e" at the end of the word makes the "u" a long "u" sound. That's why "hate" isn't pronounced "hat" and "cane" isn't pronounced "can."
